The Jumpoff 04.06.10

By Afolabi
Hola amigos! I hope your spring is coming in nicely!  I've sort of been in a retro mood all day, and these tracks have done their part in getting me there.  Welcome to The Jumpoff!

A-Side
This song was recently just used in a scene on my favorite new hbo show.  I've always liked this song, it reminds me of the something the Rascals' would make.  The kind of music that you can leave on repeat all day long just because it sounds sooo good.  The lyrics are also quite awesome.  Thank you television.

B-Side
These guys have been claiming a growing market share of my listening lately.  Considering the amount of talent that they wield, and the expansive catalog, it's a surprise that they haven't been in the limelight more often.  I've posted a few of their tracks randomly on the HL over the past few weeks.  Def peep those.  But the big news is that they released a brand new album last week called "Interpreting the Masters Vol. 1: A Tribute to Daryl Hall & John Oates".  Yup. Just press play.

brothers at arms

the times were simpler, but we were not.
the times were hard, but we were harder.
independence meant one to some, yet none to others.
the land of opportunity was just so,
though behind its veil some would say no.
sons of mothers from many a walk of life
ignorant or unwilling to aid each other,
maintaining status quo until it became a bother.
some jeered when the clouds of change swarmed,
but all that changed when brothers took arms.

the time is now, but that's so yesterday.
times are still hard, but we've got wi-fi.
we're all independent yet shackled to chrome.
the land of opportunity still stakes its claim
even though the marquee is a bit dim.
sons of mothers from many a walk of life
side by side across the continental terrain,
still knowing nothing about their brothers pain.
unable to look away from the mirror;
blissfully ignorant of the plight of their neighbor.

you ask for rain. you pray for rain.
when it does pour,
you can't stand in the deluge
asking why it's raining.

Brand new music video from Felt (MURS + Slug + Aesop Rock).  The song is sick, but the acting in the video really brings the words to life. Mad props to all involved!

Weekend Essentials: City Guide DJ Mixes ft. Soul Clap and more (XLR8R)

By Afolabi
This is an absolute must listen.  For a while now, XLR8R has been producing City Guide podcasts by various talented DJs and producers in different cities around the country.  They recently posted one from Boston nightlife impressarios Soul Clap.  Their set, especially after hearing the other city mixes, is a fitting tribute to the bean and how we get it done. Though all the mixes are great in their own right, definitely have to shout out the Philly mix from DJ/Producers Starkey and Dev79.  Splitting time on the decks to deliver a mix worthy of holding it down for the entire Keystone state.
