The Jumpoff 11.06.08

By Afolabi

Greetings my fellow Americans, and world citizens alike.  As you are probably all aware, we have just been witness to history the magnitude of which we can't fully comprehend yet.  That said, it is now more important to look inward to find the best that is within all of us, so to that together we can effect a serious change in the way we view ourselves and others as individuals, not as isolated people segments, demographics or stereotypes, for that is what divides us.  And also to see the world as a collective of humanity that must survive together lest we ALL perish.  I am reminded of something i read in Alfred A. Montapert's book, The Supreme Philosophy of Man, that seems more pertinent today than ever, "What men are, society will be".  Welcome to The Jumpoff!

A-Side

This next song is one of the most beautiful songs ever written.  Released in 1970 by an artist who definitely understands the need for understanding among all of us inhabiting this world.  The song makes mention of Moses, a man, who helped to unite and deliver a whole nation from captivity.  The last verse of the song though, has the most significant mental fodder for us to wrap our heads around. "Holy Moses, let us live in peace/let us strive to find a way to make all hatred cease/there's a man over there. What's his colour I don't care/he's my brother let us live in peace".  Elton John - Border Song

B-Side

America in the 1960s was a very different place than the country we know now.  It was a time of flux and social upheaval, which began the movement toward a more United States of America.  I'm not here to discuss history, though it cannot be undervalued in this respect.  It's important to remember, a rear-view mirror is there for you to be aware of what has passed and could still try to overtake you, but the car must still be driven forward.  This song was released in 1964, after the death of the artist who performed it.  That probably added to making the lyrics seems more prophetic at the time, but it was more a belief than reality.  Here it is again, in a different light.  Listen to it, then go out and create your own reality.  Make history.  Sam Cooke - A change is gonna come

To everyone that voted, whichever way, you did make a difference. You were, and are, a part of history, and no one can take that away from you.  Until next time, be easy.
