New Music: DATAROCK
By Afolabi
This Norwegian electro-dance-rock outfit has been plying their trade for a while now. Their latest album, Datarock Datarock, isn't exactly new, as it was released in 2005 (under their own label). Yet it hasn't quite struck a chord on this side of the Atlantic. So here's a taste of Norway for you. This is...

Pretty Lights DJ Producer Will Make You Move
By George
If Soundtribe Sector 9 -- aka STS9 -- and Girl Talk had a child,
Pretty Lights would be it. Out from Colorado, this
DJ/Producer is capable of making some seriously dance-able beats
while mixing hypnotic rythms with sound bites from Hip Hip hits and
soul classics creating nothing short of a sonic masterpiece.
If you're like me and can't get enough of Pretty Lights, check out his entire iClips live performance at the Loyal Earth Festival on 4/20/09. Make sure to check out track 12!
Looking to download full Pretty Lights albums? Right on the Pretty Lights Home Page, friend. The fact that his music is free is a great example of how artists should market themeselves these days. An artist's music is like their ad. I heard Pretty Light's ads and I'm sold -- I will see & support him any time he comes around. And since he won't be around my neck of the woods in the near future, his appearance at Bonnaroo this summer pushed me onto the "I'm Going" side of the fence.
Check him out on MySpace & Facebook.
And while you're at it, why not fan and follow The HighLife too?
Go on
and turn it up, you won't regret it. I
promise.

Stones Throw Records 2009
By Afolabi
The gents of Stones Throw Records were kind enough to make a stop on their current tour in Boston last Monday. The lineup featured Dam Funk, James Pants and The Royal Zodiac Band, Mayer Hawthorne, and Peanut Butter Wolf himself. You should already know about Mayer Hawthorne from The Jumpoff "Soul Week" on here a few months ago, but i highly recommend getting to know each of the other names i just mentioned. If you appreciate originality, creativity, and a constant insistence to go against the mold, get to know Stones Throw Records. Here as a sample, is the futuristic funk stylings of Dam Funk. I'll put up something more comprehensive later, just so you fully understand how deep their roots lie. Can you dig it!!!

Originally formed as a traveling English DJ

Muse, Klaxons, The Go! Team, Air and
others. Their minimal instrumentation and hypnotic beats make
these guys one stylistic pair to keep a pulse
on.
