the jumpoff - funk - james brown_grace jones
By AfolabiA-Side
"I feel like Ali, sting like a butterfly, float like a bee. Don't want nobody botherin' me, 'cos i refuse to lose," says James Brown, funk pioneer and impressario. I don't think i need to preface what's coming next, except that the following sounds are highly infused with machismo and bravado. James Brown - I refuse to lose/ Ants in my pants/ There it is
B-Side
Most people likely remember this next artist not so much for her music, but as Zula, the Amazon, in Arnold Schwarzenegger's Conan the Destroyer (part 2 of the series). But the Jamaican born model/singer/former Warhol muse/actress has amassed quite a catalog of music. These next two tracks sort of bookend her music career so far, but it's to her credit that she makes highly danceable music that transcends time and era. Grace Jones - Pull up to the bumper/ Love you to life
That's it today. Stay tuned for more of the funk tomorrow. Until next time, be easy.

The Jumpoff 11.14.08
By AfolabiIt's Friday!!!!!!!!!! Thank goodness. It's fair to say that i have one thing on my mind right now. Getting down. Welcome to The Jumpoff!
A-Side
Honestly, i don't think there is much i could say about the tracks today. I'm actually tweaking the usual format a little today, just today though. I was initially only going to put one of these songs on here, but i couldn't bring myself to separate them. The first is by one of the most prescient hiphop artists today, and the second is the original sample by one of the most legendary musicians of our time. When the boss says so, get down! Nas - Get Down
James Brown - The Boss
B-Side
While were in the spirit of getting down, let me re-introduce you to a group i mentioned in a post last week. I seriously can't listen to enough of these guys, so i'm going to foist them on you too. "Party people all over the world, tell me who you came to see?" Ugly Duckling - Yudee
Aight then boys and girls, go out there and get down til you can't get up. Until next time, be easy.

Daily Track
By AfolabiWassup people! Happy Friday!! Welcome to the Daily Track. Today we're buckling down on some funk. Specifically, from the Godfather of Soul, James Brown.
To kick it off, you don't see a lot of footage of James Brown as a younger man. So i found a number of performances of from that era. You get to see the man in his prime, and really feel the tightness of his band. Hope you like it. From a 1976 performance, James Brown - Sex Machine
i'll follow that up with a performance from i don't know when, but it makes it clear where Michael Jackson got all his moves from. Get up offa that thing
The next two tracks are medleys. I only wanted to pick one of them, but they're just too good.
Medley 1: The Payback, Cold Sweat,Brand New Bag
Medley 2: I Got The Feelin' / Cold Sweat / Say It Loud / Give It Up Or Turnit A Loose / Please Please Please / There Was A Time (with Sammy Davis Jr.)
Alright people, that's it for the Daily Track. Enjoy your weekends, and keep the funk alive!
Be Easy.
