Hello from the tundra!  Hope your day isn't buried underneath a snow pile somewhere.  If so, hopefully this helps dig you out.  Welcome to The Jumpoff!

A-Side
This is an artist to pay attention to in 09.  She burst onto the scene last year with the song, Chasing Pavements.  I heard that song when it came out, and just knew 'that voice is going places'.  Anyway, i was helping to celebrate my friend's b-day this weekend, she had her album playing in the car and i was reminded of why i thought that.  She reminds me of a younger Alice Russell, absolutely soulful.  But maybe a little less self-assured.  Regardless, if she keeps going the way she is, you'll be hearing a lot more from her in the future.  Here's two tracks from her debut album, 19.  Adele - Best for Last/ Right as Rain

B-Side
Now to a group that sort of defies classification.  Post-rock, experimental pop, loungy, indie-electronic-loungy-pop, it all fits.  Formed in London in 1990, they've been independently handling business since.  I can't really describe them any more, you just have to listen to them to form your own opinion.  My guess is that they'll probably rub you the right way.  Stereolab - Flourescences/ Excursions into Oh-Ah/ Cybele's Reverie/ Percolator

Seriously, who names a song "excursions into oh-ah"?  Oh well, that's it for today.  Keep on keepin' on.  Until next time, be easy.

Hey hey! Hope you are well.  I'll keep it simple today, i'm sure i've talked about this artist on here before so i won't go into too much background detail.  Welcome to The Jumpoff!

A-Side
I know yesterday i said that i love Amanda Diva, but before Ms. Diva there was Ms. Allen.  I'm still glad that i got to see her show a couple years ago when the British thing was blowing up. As much as i like Amy Winehouse, she's no Lily Allen.  Feel free to differ, that's just what i think.  Anyhoo, she's got a new album coming out February 9th called "It's not me, it's you".  Which i'm quite sure i will be making my own when the time comes.  This is the video for one of the songs from that album. It's really colorful, and kinda funny, some may say clever.  Whatever it is, i like it. Lily Allen - The Fear

B-Side
I'll admit it, i liked this song when Britney Spears put it out.  But stumbling on this version made my day today.  Lily Allen - Womanizer

Yeah, i wasn't kiddng when i said i really like her music.  February 9th, new album, go get it! Oh did i say February 9th, new album, Lily Allen already. Right, i did.  Aight people, that's all today.  Until next time, be easy.

2008 Top Pop Songs Mashup

By George

If you know me, you know that I am not fond of pop music - mainly because of it's disposability, lack of pure talent, and unoriginality, to name a few reasons. But in the spirit of the year coming to a close, I thought it would be appropriate to share this mashup of 2008 top pop songs. The mashup is actually not bad, considering all the pieces used to make it. Kind of cool.

What it is, what it is! It's been a bit.  Time has been quite scarce lately, and i really should probably be doing something else right now, but this is only going to take a moment.  I just got back from seeing the fam, and am now fully reloaded with a fresh batch of cheesiness.  Welcome to The Jumpoff!

A-Side

This is from 2006.  I posted a video with these two in it a little over a month ago, not too sure on that, i didn't check.  But anyway, that video was from Fiona Apple.  She returns the favor on this humurous, yet highly danceable track. Come up and get it... Zach Galifianakis & Fiona Apple - Up in them guts

B-Side

So i'm going to take you back to the age of the boy band right now.  I kinda always like the melody of this song; the lyrics, not so much.  I mean it's not like i really expected them to win any songwriting contests.  But i heard it again over the weekend, and all i can say is that i cannot believe that kids were listening to this.  If only they were paying attention, or maybe, i was just the only one not hearing what they were saying. Oh well, here's a chance to revisit some high school memories (good or bad).  O-Town - We fit together

Alright then peoples, catch you on the flip side.  I gotta run! Until next time, be easy.

Pop'Africana

By Afolabi

This here, boys and girls, you need to jump on immediately.  A good friend of mine is one of the main collaborators in this endeavor, which is also partly how i found out about this.

If there was ever an artistic culture you need to know, it's the African one, especially of the contemporary sort.  And this is the place to get your schooling.  Anyhow, they are best described in their own words.  Check out the site at http://www.popafricana.com/ .

" PopAfricana is tri-annual Fashion/art magazine compiled by a group of
friends from various areas of artistic expertise who were interested in a
creating a new African publication that was of high standard and serve as the Africana global book of style."

"A new visually captivating project that has just been launched by a few creatives. Founded and visually directed by Oroma Elewa, Pop'Africana is a collaborative effort which aims to re-introduce and re-define all aspects of "Art Africano" . Not only will the magazine aim to re-educate the globe on African ideas of style and individualism it also aims to serve as a robust, visual guide for understanding the "Africano pshyce" from an all inclusive perspective. Pop'Africana sets the standard for iconic style and individualism"

Check out the site. Find them on facebook.  Get some culture while you're at it.

The Jumpoff 10.29.08

Oh hello! Today we continue with another installment of music from those of the fairer sex.  Drop all your baggage, pack light, and get down with me. Welcome to The Jumpoff!

A-Side

Some may not know this song, but you know the sample. If you have listened to Dr. Dre's track, Xxxplosive, you definitely know this beat.  This song came out about a year after that iteration, but it's still a solid track with a serious message.  This artist's bohemian quirkiness may be distract from what she's trying to say sometimes, but please don't miss this one. The message is about leaving baggage behind, so it (1) doesn't scare off something's that could potentially be good for you; and (2) doesn't weigh you down and prevent you from moving forward.  Really simple, let it go.  Erykah Badu - Bag Lady

B-Side

Now that you've dropped the baggage, it's time to branch out and expand your horizons, musically that is.  Everyone in the world knows of this next group.  But it seems that even with 55 million albums sold worldwide no one is willing to acknowledge liking them, even when they know the words to a lot of their songs.  This is one of those groups that most people have on their "i love them, but i'm too embarrassed to ever tell anyone" list. Well, maybe you should think about breaking out of that.  Another thing, if you actually listen to any one of their three albums front to back (and on this i am certain) you will rethink your current affection, or lack of, toward them. I'm not saying they don't have some sappiness to them, but come on, people admit to liking Dashboard Confessional.  Anyhoo, get on your dancing shoes, and do what they're telling you.  From their third album, Forever, Spice Girls - Get down with me

Aight then people, that's it today.  Keep your minds open, and stay fresh. Until next time, be easy.
